Once There Was a Love Story

Updated: Sep 7, 2020

We don't usually get a happy ending. But for every heartache we go through, we always get to love again.

“Hello, is anybody home?” She could hear somebody calling outside. Nobody in the house seemed to hear. As she was sleeping over her friend’s place after their senior’s prom night, she got up and peeked through the window. When he saw her, it was love at first sight.

As what they say that the rest is history, they became inseparable after that meeting. School was already over and summer had just begun. They were together most of the time and their friend was one witness of the passion that was happening between them. The days were so fast and the next thing they knew, summer was over and an unforgettable one at that for them.

Then it was time to say goodbye. She was going to another city far away from him to study college. Although their hearts were breaking, they had to part ways and promised that they would wait for each other.

They wrote to one another frequently at first. But then the days turned into weeks. Weeks into months. Months into years. Then the communication became rare.

The next thing she knew, he was seeing another girl. She was heartbroken. He was her first love. But remembering her promise, she stayed faithful. She didn’t mind the guys who wanted to win her heart. For her, she made a promise. She had to wait.

Then college was over. She went back home. They met again. She already had doubts but she still stayed true to her promise. They got back together.

But things had never been the same again. He was still keeping something from her. He lied all the time.

One day, he told her that he couldn’t come home over the weekend because he would be working. So, she called him in the office. But the person on the other line said, “He’s not here. He went home yesterday.”

She was so hurt but she just let it go. But then came the last straw. She found out that he brought another girl to his house on New Year’s Eve. She finally decided, “This is it. I don’t want this anymore.”

She gathered all her guts and finally broke up with him. He didn’t see it coming. He cried. He begged. He asked for a second chance. She knew she could forgive him. But another chance? Even if she wanted to, she couldn’t give him that anymore. She lost faith in him. She realized he wasn’t worth another chance. She already gave him one and he blew it. A part of her had died along with her love for him. She just couldn’t do it anymore.

As what they always say, the trouble with hello is goodbye. It’s not a bitter farewell but not an amicable one either. They just went their separate ways.

They got married to different people a few years later. They’re both happy with their own families. If you ask her if she still ever thinks of those days when they were together, she will just smile and say, “It’s a long time ago. It was good while it lasted. It just wasn’t meant to be.” As for him, he told a friend he saw her once and they talked. He was also happy to see her after all this time.

There was once a love story that wasn’t meant to be. And they lived happily with someone else ever after.
